Smile Straighteners: Should I Get Veneers or Invisalign?

You’re not alone if you’re feeling self-conscious about slightly gapped, crooked, or overcrowded teeth. Every year, millions of people turn to cosmetic dental services to help enhance the spacing of their smiles.

For example, porcelain veneers and Invisalign are both popular ways to address dental misalignments and boost your confidence in your appearance. But how do you know which treatment option is right for you? Continue reading to learn more about each service to help you decide!

What Are Veneers?

Veneers are thin shells, usually made from resilient ceramic or composite resin, that are customized to resemble your teeth then are cemented over their front surface to hide imperfections. This can be an effective way to address a range of aesthetic concerns, including chips, cracks, stubborn stains, and milder dental misalignments.

These resilient restorations are strong enough to help shield the underlying enamel from additional damage and discoloration, but they don’t exert any pressure on your teeth in order to shift them, as orthodontic services do. If you want to move them to their ideal places, you might be a better candidate for Invisalign.

How Does Invisalign Work?

Invisalign is often considered a more comfortable, discreet alternative to traditional braces for straightening smiles. Instead of relying on metallic brackets and wires bonded to your teeth, this treatment utilizes a series of transparent plastic trays that are customized to fit snugly over your teeth to gently shift them over a designated period.

These clear aligners are completely removable, meaning patients can enjoy all their favorite foods and can more easily maintain their twice-daily at-home dental hygiene routine to prevent common issues, such as cavities and gum disease. But you must also gently scrub the trays morning and night to remove plaque and residue buildup that might leave them looking dark or cloudy, defeating the purpose of ‘invisible’ orthodontics.

Which Service is Right for Me?

Veneers can be ideal for those who are more concerned with their smile’s appearance or have more minor misalignments to mask, but if you have developed severe dental decay or gum disease, your mouth may not be healthy enough to support them. Meanwhile, Invisalign actually shifts your teeth to their proper positions, which can potentially help improve your oral health.

If you’re still unsure which option is best for you, your dentist can provide a professional recommendation after your initial consultation and examination. Either way, your provider can devise a customized treatment plan to help you build and maintain a beautifully spaced smile that enhances your self-esteem!
